The Award Winning OptiMass 8000

On the 1st November 2001 GBC Scientific Equipment won the "Esso and Mobil Companies Engineering Excellence Award for Engineering Innovation". This award came under the larger banner of the "Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards 2001".

On the 2nd of November 2001, major Melbourne newspaper - 'The Age' - printed a section devoted to the Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards in addition to the regular sections of the paper. Winners and Highly Commended efforts of other categories had details relating to their achievements published.

Below is the excerpt about GBC's win...

"ENGINEERING INNOVATION"

Winner: GBC Scientific Equipment: OptiMass 8000.

A little basic physics. Then some economics.

The Physics:

If you want to determine what metallic elements are present in your sample, you can identify the element by its unique mass.

The award-winning new OptiMass 8000 Inductively Coupled Plasma Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometer detects the mass, and thus the element, a radical new way by measuring its time of flight, taken to reach a detector.
GBC developed ultra high-speed electronics to reach simultaneous determination of all metallic elements in a sample in 10 seconds.

The economics:

Time is money. Ten seconds means export dollars.

This is a story about an Australian company, a Victorian company, which found itself in a mature market, said the judges.

It set about recognising, and producing and procuring new technology and applying it.

To leapfrog significantly its competitors with true innovation three major innovations being speed and accuracy, simultaneous sampling and size of instruments.

GBC applied rich and powerful concepts to effect a world class result by the efforts of their own engineers and physicists. Their work is patented and in-house. 90 percent of their work is exported to 80 countries."

On November 21st, the OptiMass 8000 went on to win its category in the Australian Engineering Excellence awards - outshining competitors such as Varian, Inc with their Cary Eclipse.

The state and national wins were great rewards for the development team of the OptiMass 8000 and further proof that GBC Scientific Equipment manufactures world-class instruments to the highest possible engineering standards.
